Why YOU should join us for the first Green Book ride
This Saturday will be the first of a four-part series of bike rides that I will host. They will all focus on the Baton Rouge businesses that were featured in the Green Book between the 1920s until the book ended its publication in the 1960s.
This ride is being done in conjunction with the opening of the Smithsonian’s traveling exhibition highlighting “The Negro Motorist Green Book.”
For the first ride, I selected locations connected to the Lincoln Hotel. The reason why I selected that location is because it will actually be the 66th anniversary of when the hotel was built! The Lincoln Hotel opened its doors on Sunday, August 21, 1955.
Today, that building is waiting for its second life. It’s ready, but the building permits have taken longer to secure than originally anticipated. One of the project leaders, Anthony Kimble, is going to join us on the ride to talk about the work he’s been doing in the neighborhood.
I’m THRILLED Anthony agreed to talk to the group! This is really going to be something special! He’s going to meet us outside the Legacy on 14th building, which is the headquarters for his operation. That building was once connected to the Lincoln Theater. Today, it’s a true sign of the revival of the neighborhood, both literally and figuratively.
I’m also excited to take the group to the Electric Depot. I’m hoping some people will come who have not been on one of my rides before because I love seeing the “wow” moment when people see the Electric Depot campus for the first time.
I hope some of you will join us for the ride. If you can’t make it, don’t worry, there will be THREE MORE of the rides. Also, make sure to go down to the museum to explore the exhibit.
