This weather is perfect for bike rides and we’ve been enjoying our ghost stories. I’ll have a summary of each of the stories at the end of the month in one newsletter. In that newsletter, I’ll include some pictures from our Halloween ride.
That’s right, we’re dressing up for Halloween! On Monday, October 28th, everyone is encouraged to dress up. There will be a prize for the best costume! Bonus points if you come as a character from one of the stories we’ve told on our rides.
VELO MUERTOS
The day before the costume ride will be the special annual ride hosted by Mark Martin. Every year he graciously leads a tour of the historic cemeteries. This year he will make stops at the Catholic Cemetery (St. Joseph’s), the Jewish Cemetery, Magnolia Cemetery, the National Cemetery, and Sweet Olive Cemetery.
The ride is free and open to the public, but for the first time ever, we have a shirt you can purchase to commemorate this special ride! They are print-on-demand, so there will not be any of these shirts physically available at the ride. The only way to get one is to purchase them off the website.
TIME CHANGE
As we approach the end of Daylight Saving, the nights will begin to draw in, bringing earlier sunsets and cooler weather. To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants, our beloved story rides will take a pause until spring. But don’t worry! The season ahead holds plenty of exciting night rides. We’ll venture out to see dazzling Christmas light displays, visit local businesses, and, of course, make those essential hot chocolate stops along the way. There’s no better way to embrace the cozy side of winter than on two wheels with friends and a warm cup in hand. Stay tuned for more details on the upcoming rides—this winter promises to be just as adventurous!
LIGHT UP THE NIGHT
We’ve officially launched our annual Light Up the Night fundraiser. This year, we’ll be collecting contributions through the Downtown East Social Ride website.
All funds collected will go towards purchasing lights that will be distributed in the following ways:
During the rides when we see folks riding without lights;
Given to individuals who participate in the rides to give out in their neighborhoods;
Given to the Baton Rouge Police Department for officers to give to people when they see them riding without lights;
Given to Front Yard Bikes for their youth participants to use on their bikes.
I announced this round of fundraising and the purpose of the program during a segment on WAFB’s 9News at 9 on Friday, October 18th.
VISIT THE WEBSITE
If you haven’t checked out the new website, go give it a look. I’ve been working hard to build it out. I still have a long way to go, but it’s looking pretty good, I think. However, I’d love to hear your suggestions. Tell me what you would like to see, or what you think should change.
Sounds like so much fun.
