Settling into a new routine
So it’s been a minute! I’ve been deep in the trenches battling with my schedule to figure out how in the world I will be able to get all the things that I want/need to get done each week.
For those of you who haven’t heard, I switched to a new job! I left my career in journalism to move to the nonprofit sector. It’s not as dramatic as it sounds, but it certainly felt that way.
It’s been about a month since the switch and I’ve been in nonstop work mode. Along with learning what in the world I’m doing at my new job, I’ve had two additional side projects for two FAB-U-LOUS women and a third project will soon be announced, too! If you want to learn more about all that, CLICK HERE to follow me on Facebook. I’m going to be posting more about it there because I want to use that space to promote local people doing great local work.
Of course the other side project I’ve been working on is… THIS!
When I started this newsletter, I knew I wanted it to be a space related to all the Downtown East content I produce, but I didn’t know exactly how to do it. After playing around a bit (thanks for following along with that), I decided the best thing to do is to put out ONE newsletter a week and it will have a few different sections.
Moving forward I plan to put out the newsletter Wednesday morning. However, all this is subject to change because who knows what will happen next!
Thanks for joining my journey.
YEAH BIKE!
Mika goes to Copenhagen!
On this episode Mika talks about his trip to bike Mecca with our good buddy Dominic. He shared some of the really neat things Copenhagen did to make the city more bike friendly.
I made some comparisons to the Government Street project in Baton Rouge. Lots of people believe bikes were the reason for the change to the road, but in reality the bike lanes were an afterthought.
Also, find out why a German guy decided to come to Baton Rouge and my former boss called to tell me about it. Oh yeah, it’s a rather interesting story.
CLICK HERE to give it a listen.
Speaking of Mika, he’s back in Baton Rouge! He got back this weekend and will be here for a couple weeks. Last night he led the ride and along the way he gave a bike 101 presentation. Contrary to popular belief, he’s a certified safety instructor! Yeah, I know!
If you want to see a fun video, you can follow me on TikTok @go.downtowneast. I’ve been adding some bike and garden videos there. If you’re not on TikTok, it’s cool, you can also find it on Instagram. If you’re not on Instagram, then you just need to admit that you don’t like social media and move on with your life.
Sunday we will meet at 10 a.m. in City Park for YOGA led by the fabulous Tina Ufford! The breeze is incredible and there’s something very calming about being outside under a massive oak tree. After yoga, we’ll go for a short bike ride and then end at Leola’s Cafe at 12:30 p.m. for brunch. Come to one part or all of it!
And start getting your Halloween costume ready because we’re going to have a party at Leola’s on Monday, October 25. Y’all, I booked a band and everything! It’s going to be a blast!
Come dressed up and bring a snack for the party. I’m not made of money : ) The person with the best Downtown East Social Ride themed costume will win some sort of prize. I don’t know what yet.
And for Halloween day, make sure to join us for the Velo Muertos. It will be a bike tour of the historic cemeteries in the area. The ride will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Capitol Park Museum.
