DATE CHANGE: The day of this ride is moving to Monday, August 9.
On August 5, 1862, Baton Rouge was forever transformed by a battle that left the people of Baton Rouge fearing for their lives.
On Monday, August 9, our weekly ride will focus on this battle. Leading the tour will be Ronnie Harris!
“Beginning with Louisiana secession from the Union on January 26, 1861 and ending with a battle between two equal size forces tempered with one side with superior gun power and the other with a secret weapon, a battle of life and death occurs in a place of foreboding… a cemetery.”
Ronnie is a regular of the ride and he’s no stranger to researching local history. In his free time, he’s volunteer his time and researched the history of the Little Misery Cemetery.
The cemetery is located off of Old Hammond Highway and is recognized as one of the oldest and most historic cemeteries in Baton Rouge for African Americans. I will certainly tell more of that story on another day.
For now, join us Monday night to learn more about the Battle of Baton Rouge. We will meet at the Electric Depot, 1503 Government Street, at 6 p.m. BRING WATER! It’s hot outside and although we will be going slow and taking lots of breaks, the heat will pull it out of you!
