The first episode of Do The Thing was so much fun we decided to keep doing the thing. This week we’re talking about the environment.
Wait, I thought this show was about bikes?
Okay, you’re not wrong, it is about bikes. People who ride bikes tend to become, if they’re not already, interested in environmental issues. I’m sure there are legitimate explanations, but here’s my logic.
When you ride a bike, you slow down so you can really see the world around you. You also feel more connected to the world around you because you’re physically in that space. I’m much more aware of the weather patterns. I’m much more aware of how much trash ends up on the side of the road. I’m much more aware of wildlife. And I’m very much more aware of smells.
A car is another artificial environment, just like our home. It allows us to divorce ourselves from the world around us. We instead tend to focus on the human drama that surrounds us, and less on what that human drama is doing to our natural world.
This episode starts with a discussion about the book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster by Bill Gates and ends with an explanation about the concept of energy slaves. We reference a bunch of different topics, so here are some links to help you learn more about those topics.
More than anything, we teased a few feature topics. In particular, we mentioned lawns and recycling. At first, you might think both are positive things for our environment. Well, not so much.
Recently I wrote an article about why I think getting rid of your lawn is a great idea. CLICK HERE to read more on that topic.
As for recycling, this is a much more devious issue. No, I’m not over-exaggerating. CLICK HERE to read an eye opening article from NPR.
Much more to come from this podcast on the topic of the environment and our love for it. New episodes will be released every Sunday.
